He was repeatedly called into action as Turkey controlled possession for long stretches and looked to generate danger through crosses and sustained pressure around the box, though Burgess remained composed throughout and helped limit clear-cut opportunities despite facing one of the tournament's more talented attacking groups. He entered the World Cup after another season as a regular starter in the Championship for Swansea and once again demonstrated why he has become a trusted figure in Australia's back line.
